The workshop will be organized into two parts. The first one will present the Slovenian Open Science Community and its activities, while the second one will ofer a short guide on Open Science and Academic Publishing, including Core Principles of Publishing Ethics and Artificial Intelligence  in Scholarly Publishing. The three lectures will be given by experts from University of Primorska and MDPI publishing house.

The event is organized as a course within the ACROSS Teacher Training Academy (TT2.4), MSCA SMASH activities and as a part of the activity 6.2.1/4 of the Open Science Action Plan, funded by the Government of the Republic of Slovenia.

      The Slovenian Open Science Community and its activities within the framework of the National Open Science Action Plan 45m

      The presentation describes the formation of the Slovenian Open Science Community and its role in implementing the National Open Science Action Plan. It highlights the achievements of its expert bodies, including the Open Science Monitor, the introduction of secondary publishing rights, and the Slovenian Open Science Community Awards.

      Dr. Ana Slavec is employed at the University of Primorska, partly as an assistant professor at the Faculty of Mathematics, Natural Sciences and Information Technologies, and partly as a research fellow at the Andrej Marušič Institute, InnoRenew CoE research group. She holds a degree in sociology – social informatics and a PhD in statistics, both from the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Ljubljana, where she worked as a research assistant at the Centre for Social Informatics and later at the Social Science Data Archive. She is the president of the Slovenian Open Science Community (SSOZ) and a member of the open science working group at the Slovenian Research and Innovation Agency.

      During this lecture the participants will firstly learn about the basic principles of open science, open access and its importance. Different publishing models will then be described, focusing on the future of scientific publishing. As an example, the MDPI’s position and role in Open Science will be presented.

      Ethics and Artificial Intelligence in Scholarly Publishing 50m

      This talk explores the ethical foundations of scholarly publishing and the growing impact of artificial intelligence on research integrity. It reviews core principles such as transparency, fair editorial processes, intellectual property and authorship, data and image integrity, and the protection of research participants, alongside mechanisms for ethical oversight, investigations, and post-publication corrections. The presentation also examines international standards, including COPE (Committee on Publication Ethics) guidelines. Finally, it critically assesses the opportunities and risks of AI in publishing, highlighting the need for clear guidelines and responsible implementation to safeguard research integrity.
